Why is it advantageous?

Uhm...nothing.

The trachea is where air goes into your lungs. It has cartilage rings that holds its shape, so that you can't swallow so much that you suffocate yourself.

The esophagus (where food goes into your stomach), on the other hand, can stretch because it's basically a tube. This is a good thing because it means you can swallow some pretty big amounts of food.

By the way, this is in your textbook.

The trachea will remain uneffected as the food do not pass through trachea.

The trachea is ringed with rings of cartledge to prevent its becoming misshapen. That prevents the airway from becoming constricted during eating.

You'll probably choke or it will get big and you will have a hard time swallowing.
