The specific inventor of the abacus is unknown and its origin sometimes raises arguements since many different places had similar devices. It has existed in Babylon and China between 1000BC and 500BC.
It has usually been used as a counting instrument by merchants and business owners to aid in counting money and their products, or more simple to teach counting.
The abacus is still used up to this day, mostly by persons who are blind.
