Hope was still left in the box

The world remained extremely bleak for an unspecified interval, until Pandora "chanced" to revisit the box again, at which point Hope fluttered out. Thus, mankind always has hope in times of evil.

the ending of the myth is as follows :

".........mankind had lived a life in a paradise without worry. Epimetheus told Pandora never to open the box she had received from Zeus. However, Pandora's curiosity got the better of her and she opened it, releasing all the misfortunes of mankind (plague, sorrow, poverty, crime, despair, greed, vice, old age, sickness, insanity, spite, passion, famine, deceit, etc.). Once opened, she shut it in time to keep one thing in the jar: hope 1. The world remained extremely bleak for an unspecified interval, until Pandora "chanced" to revisit the box again, at which point Hope fluttered out. Thus, mankind always has hope in times of evil.

Pandora shuts the box--she hears another fate trying to get out. The fate tells Pandora she should let her out--that she is hope, the cure for all the evils that were just released.

Pandora opened the box and all the troubles of the world flew out. But what remained was Hope. That's most of what we have against the demons. That and courage, and perseverance. Don't give up.

It was not hope that stayed in the box. That is a common misunderstanding. It was the "gift" of foresight that remained in the box, thereby preserving the already present human emotion of hope.
