It is a matter of personal preference. It took me only a day to learn how to crochet (I think because my grandmother and mother used to do it - its in my genes), but it took me weeks to learn how to knit.
It is also a matter of what kinds of projects you want to do - some patterns are easier to do with crocheting/knitting. For example, I make scarfs by crocheting, hats by knitting. Afghans are made through crocheting, sweaters are made through knitting, traditionally.
I would recommend you try out both if you are thinking about learning how to do one or the other. I took some free classes at a local community college (there might be something similar near you). Both are a lot of fun!

I can do both and personally prefer knitting because I can make wearable clothing, but it really depends on what you want to make. For clothes I prefer knitting. It's much stretchier than crochet and also makes a smoother fabric. On the other hand, if I want to make something small with a lot of intricate shaping (like a flower or a toy), crochet works much better. I sometimes knit a sweater and crochet the edging.

My mother taught me to knit when I was like 5 or 6. I could never grasp how to purl, so all I know how to do is the basic stitch. I have knitted some afghans, and prefer to use the big, giant needles.
I took a class to learn how to crochet when I was 10. I loved it! It just seemed easier for me, and your project seems to go much faster.
As to why one is preferred over the other, I think it's just one of those things that has to do with how our brains work!

knit is more difficult, and I'm a crocheter. Knitting was invented to make clothes etc. Crochet however didn't come along until cheap yarn was available and doilies were the first things made. Its more of a display talent while knitting is more practical.

i prefer knitting, i think that it depends on which one u learn first, or maybe even if you like to see results quickly, use crochet. i tried to crochet, by i do it too tight so i cant really get the hang of t. also, whnver i left it on the table, the one stitch always used to come out and i wouold have to do the whole thing all over again. so knitting is better for me because it also has a stopper at the end! just be careful not to loose your needles/hooks! (happened to me many times :P)

When you crochet you get almost instant results, typical of our society, people want instant gratification.
Knitting takes much more time to see a pattern develop into something.
The degree of difficulty depends on what you like. I prefer to crochet as you can stop the project and nothing happens to it as the end of the hook is bent. Knitting you must keep track as the stitches are much harder to follow and unless you put a stich holder on the end of the needle your stiches can fall off.

Some people become comfortable with the one learned first and are in a comfort zone. I have been crocheting for 24 years and have not learned to knit, although I do desire to one day. I think knitting is harder because it requires two needles.

Personally I prefer to crochet.
actually, other than the very basics, I can't knit at all.
As for why I crochet and knit, I really don't know. I was taught as a kid to crochet and just stuck with it.

i have been crocheting for quite some time, and wanted to learn to knit but thought it would be just way too hard. then one night last spring my sister-in-law was down and she took me shopping and bought me a knitting book, knitting needles, and some yarn for a knitted project. then once we got back she sat me down and showed me how to knit, it didn't take long to learn at all. so now i do both. i love both of them. curently i have quite a few works in progress, i am crocheting a blanket for my oldest daughter, almost done with it :). i am crocheting a blanket for my middle daughter, almost done with that too, and i am knitting a blanket with hearts on it for my youngest daughter. they all are going to be xmas gifts. i'm also going to knit them each a washcloth, one is going to be a heart, another a duck, and the other one a teddy bear, then i'm going to put each washcloth in a seperate basket and fill the basket with bath/shower stuff and toys for another xmas gift :) i also have crocheted the two older girls a purse last year for xmas, and i'm going to knit them each one this year, i'm going to use the dishcloth patterns i have that have designs in them, like different animals, and make that the front of the purse, and just use knit stitch for the back. i have a picture of a butterfly purse i made for my daughter's friend on my yahoo 360, the way i took the picture its hard to see the butterfly, but in person its very noticeable. here's the link to my 360 if anyone would like to take a look. ok, i'm just rambling here, sorry for that, i just absolutetly love both knitting and crochet! when i get done with the blankets for the girls i will also post pics of those on my 360.

I prefer crocheting because it is faster, and I only have to worry about 1 loop unraveling. I'd tried knitting several times - taught myself mostly, and it never failed, my loops would slip off of the knitting needles and my work would be ruined.
