I just moved into my new apartment and signed up for the basic cable package which is about 20 channels. When I changed a menu setting on my TV I wound up getting almost 75 channels. There is no cable box involved. I just switched from cable 1 to cable 2 setting on my television and whamo channel heaven. Could I get in trouble for this? Is it the Cable company's mistake? I guess the most important question is will they be able to tell without a cable box on my TV??!!

Shhhh don't tell anyone!
It could be for one of several reasons.
1) They are using the "Puppy Dog" sales technique on you. That is where they leave the higher level of service on so that when they do cut you back you'll miss the higher level of service so much that you'll call them up, & agree to pay more for the upgrade.
2) For Basic service they actually have to come in to the building & install a filter on your cable at their distribution box to keep out the additional channels. The former tennant of your apartment may have had the higher level of service, & the cable company just hasn't sent a serviceman over to your building to install the filter yet.
3) sometimes when the servicemen are out troubleshooting a problem on their cable service, they will "temporarily" remove filters from selected customers lines to see if the fault they are tracing disappears. Once they are finished, they are supposed to return & replace all of the filters that were removed. That doesn't always happen. In that case it becomes your lucky day.

I had a similar situation when I moved into my last house. They didn't get around to my house to install the filter for a full 4 years. By that time I had put the whole thing out of my mind, & just kept watching the level of service they gave me, & paying my bills for the basic service. One day they woke up to the fact that I was getting better service than I was paying for, & left a notice on my door that said that if I didn't want to get cut back that I should fill out the attached form, sign it, & mail it in. Otherwise, if I ignored it, they would come back within the next 30 days, & cut off my extra channels.
I chose to ignore it, & said "Oh well, I gues I'm going to lose some of my extra cable channels". Well it seems that they forgot about me again, for ANOTHER TWO YEARS.
Eventually, they woke up to this fact again, & they started the whole process over with the notice at the door, etc. But this time I wasn't so lucky. In a few days a serviceman showed up & said he was going to cut back my service if I didn't sign on the dotted line. I said "Go ahead, I've been waiting for you guys to get it right, It's about time you showed up" He looked at me like I was from another planet. He couldn't believe that I could live without the extra channels. What he didn't know was that we had already sold that house & were about to move again in a little over a month. When we moved, I upgraded to the higher level of service at the new house.
Who knows, maybe it can work out the same for you.
Good Luck.

A lot of times a cable company will extend the channels to new customers to try to lure you to order more extended cable, at a higher price of course. A few years ago some of the cable companies would run premium channels off and on for a short time to get subscribers to order them. They usually stayed on for about a week. They are probably just trying to entice you.

the actual shown actuality that you get in basic terms off-air channels, and no cable channels verifies that the coax cable is appearing as an antenna. in case you own the coax cable , which i anticipate you do, it is your antenna. i'd purchase a cheap set of rabbit ears from Radio Shack and be conscious if the signal is even more effective perfect. by technique of how, because you're determining to purchase information superhighway, evaluate procuring an low priced Roku container and subscribing to Netflix for $8/mo. which will furnish a lot more effective leisure than in basic terms those few broadcast channels.

no mistake. theyre just giving you a free preview. this always happens when you get new cable for new place or whatever. no trouble can come. in a few months the cable company will shut off the rest of the channels.

Sounds as if the Cable Gods are smiling upon you....don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Enjoy while it lasts!

As long as you didn't hook up anything illegaly, or change any of the cords as set by the cable company, you haven't done anything wrong as far as I can see.

judging by the technology that the cable company has, it could be either a free preview, or someone that works for them forgot to add filters back to your cable line. You will probably never know unless you give them a call.

No, they will not know.

Hmmm, I am not sure. Rest assured that now that you have asked that question you will either get a huge bill or they will be knocking on your door in about 10 seconds.
