iam looking into buying a new range. which is the best coil or smoothtop ranges??? i know that smoothtop is more desired but is it really a better choice??? ive heard of them getting scratched and broken alot and are expensive to fix

smoothtop ranges have changed quite a bit since they were first introduced. The tops are much more durable, less prone to scratches, & are protected against breakage from overheating.
Probably the best thing to do though, is to buy a new set of pots & pans if you purchase one. They require pans with a heavy, flat bottom to work properly. If you check out the bottom of pans used for years on coil type burners, you will usually see damage or imprints of the burner.

I've had both and I prefer my smooth top. The only downfall I notice is that I can't make jiffy pop popcorn on it because the stove top is ceramic and it does not work. It is so much easier to clean a smooth top, you just use a razor blade and scrape stuff off it. I have never had mine scratch.

that would be my thinking too, the glass tops are more likely to break, plus the coils are easily replacable.
