simple.. hear it...!!!
well on the brighter side, here goes the answers..
1. U need to backup all ur required data frm ur hdd to ur friends hdd(good one..!!) asap.. but while transferring the data use a good copying/recovery tool like Badcopy or anything similar to do all the transfer..if no other hdd available, then try burning the data with the data integrity check on..
2. Yes and No. probably depending on the state of crash, the data may or maynot be recovered.. There are commercial s/w's available, but most can only recover corrupted data..Google out to find the best ones.. Other crashes u need a fully fledged lab like those in crime labs and all.. which is ofcourse beyond our scope..!!
3. Well no one can really say that except ur hdd itself..!! The period may be roughly around the warranty period plus day the sound begins..!!
4. Just go for the brand with most years of replacable warranty.. and try to stick to famous ones like the Seagate, Maxtor etc..or if u hav fat purse go for the higher ones like IBM etc for a change.. though no guarantee that its better..!!

My best advise (since my roommate had the same thing happen) Stop useing your system and go buy another Hard Drive. They are cheap thase days, and most come with instructions on how to copy files from the dieing one. They are easy to install, If you know how to change a light bulb, the Hard disk change will be the same.
Don't wait until your HD is dead otherwise you will lose everythng on it. My roommate waited till the last second (complete system crash) and was unable to recover anything.
I cant help you on "Brands" but most are good (your local computer store should help you out) My roommate has an XP and he went to "Best Buy" for his new Hard drive (50 bucks) and now his system even runs better than before.

By another hard drive and copy your files off now.
I recommend not using that hard drive until you can do so. Don't want it to crash before you figure out a new one to buy.
Recovering data is a possibility, but it is expensive and may not retrieve everything. Generally the average consumer hard drives lasts around 3 years, though it depends on your usage. I would recommend Seagate with their 5 year warranty on all their drives

Save it to some other Media. Your engineer is write, take his help in finding the disc and saving the stuff, before you loose it. Look up in yellow pages who recovers the stuff, from crash disc.
A1. First save the file to a disc on A drive. May need lots of disc.
A2. Yes, some times only.
A3. when some thing like this happens. Most people back the stuff to second disc.
A4. Up to you but again ask your engineer.

the sounds like your hard will crash. but how long it takes , i don't know.
but if your hard crash you most use the program called "recover my file". it can help you much. but if your hard disk head is broken then you may recover 30% - 70% of your file.
i suggest you that buy a new hard disk before your hard crash. then you most backup your file.
the seagate is the best brand. western and maxtor are good too.

1. Start burning your important data now.
2. No data can't be recovered, unless you have another hard drive on your computer, then you can save important stuff there first.
3. Hard drives are getting cheaper as we speak, and more cheaper litterly.. companies are making them cheaper, and they don't last as long.
4. go for the brand that your computer tech suggests. He knows what goes with your computer.

It is better you change your HDD. Data recovery is very expensive deal, and it is not guarnteed that all the data are recovered after crash. Seagate is the best in HDD. How frequent? No such time limitation is there to change HDD.

Get a new HDD, install the Operating system. Connect your old HDD as Secondary or Slave, afterwards you can copy your data easily.
