I have been named the considerate smoker only because I do not smoke around people, like at a get together I will go outside to smoke, I don't smoke in my car, even my house (makes it smell bad), anyways my husband, child and I went to a store and I dropped them off at the door and I parked way out in the parking lot so I could stand outside my car and smoke and not bother anyone. A woman who was walking to her car 3 rows away saw me and started coming my way (I thought she must know me) I put out my cigarette because I don't smoke around anyone I don't know that smokes. She said to me "People like you should be shot" I said "excuse me" she said "you smoke and I think it should be against the law to smoke in public you disgust me" I said "maam I parked out here so I wouldn't bother anyone with my smoking and I believe there shouldn't be somking in resturants etc, but you went out of your way to come over here to where I was smoking". She then turned and walked away. What do you think ?

I get this crap all the time. I'm not like you, a considerate smoker, and I'll tell you why - there's absolutely no gratitude from non-smokers.

Just two months ago, it was pissing down with rain and I was standing at the bus stop. Everyone was trying to crowd in under the shelter. I was the first one to get the the bus stop, but after five minutes, I fancied a smoke.

Since we were all huddled together, I thought I'd be nice and step out of the shelter (in to the rain) before I lit up. I found a little shelter under a tree and I had my smoke there. A few of the people were still tutting at me, even though I was nowhere near them. When the bus finally came, and I went to get back in to place (as first in the queue) I was shoved out the way by all these bastards who I was trying to be nice to.

I have to say, I lost my temper and the first guy that tried to get on the bus, I yanked him off and threw him in to the bushes. Nobody tried to get on before me after that.

My point is, I smoke. I enjoy smoking. I pay ridiculous amounts of tax on my cigarettes. I want to be allowed to smoke in peace without any judgemental pricks forcing their opinion on me. If you don't like the fact that I smoke, stay the hell away from me.

By the way, what kind of person would say "Smokers should be shot"? The usual reason people give for hating smokers is "seconday smoke" (which is STILL unproven despite what the newspapers say). Secondary smoke, if it did exist, would take YEARS to affect someone. Shooting someone takes seconds and the result is that same - death. How the hell could that stupid b*tch justify what she said? It's totally hypocritical.

I'm all angry now. I'm going for a smoke.

You do sound like a very considerate smoker. You go out of your way to not bother people with it, and I think that is commendable. As for that woman; well, people like her need to be shot. But you also have to realize that you were right in this situation; she invaded your space when you were trying to be considerate, so that was her problem. Don't let rude people like her bother you. She must have some major mental problems.

The woman is a freaking idiot. Now if you were standing in front of the door of the store, I could see her complaining, but being way out in the parking lot like that is nuts. I think most of these people who are all freaky about it are crazy too. I try to be considerate myself, but if a smarta** makes a comment, then I become unconsiderate. Have a smoke for me and a great day.

That bothers me, too. I mean, we respect people's right NOT to smoke, so why can't they respect our right to smoke, if we are going out of our way to keep our distance and respect their airspace?

I was sitting in my car in the LARGE parking lot of an electronics store, parked away from other cars, smoking a cigarette with the car windows up. A security guard came up and told me I was going to have to put it out or leave. That, in my opinion, is just TOO MUCH.......

As a smoker of 4 years..........I think that lady is a prick and should mind her own business. BUT however, do you really need that cigarette? I recently quit 2wks ago and i feel so much better now. I can actually breath through my nose. I know there's more good to come since i've quit. But other than that, i think you were being very conciderate smoking far away from other people and that lady should have been smacked for her input.

Maybe she had someone die of lung cancer. She may have just had a bad day. But, you were totally doing the right thing. I don't smoke but, all of my family smokes. When I go home I get called the cigarette police because I'm always saying your smoking another one. But, anyways just keep doing what your doing its fine. Next time blow smoke in their face

I think you are very considerate and that is great that you don't smoke around others, I only wish more people were like you. You are a good person, thank you for that. :)

I think she was so wrong for what she did.

I am a smoker too, although not as considerate as you are and i truly applaud you for what you do ( have respect for others). You keep up your good humor and don't let this incident bother you to much. There is always some jerk out there somewhere.
So good luck and keep up your consideration for others.
