no they will just change the name give a new account on his name he does not have to say that he knows you if they know that you are till in the house then you will have to pay it before they chang the name
the best way to take care of this is as a new tenant
must power company will ask for a phone # if the phone is not on his name he just have to say that he does not have a phone put in yet
but you will be receiveing your old bill until you pay it

Moving the bill to his name will not reduce nor remove the obligation of the current bill. Since he's address is the same as yours, it will be pretty evident to the power company what's going on when he tries to move the bill to his name / same address. They will gladly put the bill in his name, but that will essentially make two of you responsible for the bill and they will make a negative mark on both of your credit reports should you default.
You will have to pay the bill or work out some agreement with the electric company to make payments.
Hope this helps and good luck.

This has nothing to do with your question, but I keep seeing people mentioning being “common-law married” and if you live in the U.S. there are only about a dozen states that still recognize common law marriage, so IF you live in a state that does not recognize it, then it doesn’t matter how long you've lived together, you are not common law married.
Your question is one for your power company, but there's a very good chance it's not going to be as simple as changing the name on the bill.

If you are that far behind and changing the bills name at all, they will want you to fax a new lease/deed showing you just occupied the house more then likely. That way they know the new name has no association with the old one. Even if you have different last names.

Big question is, where's the money to pay the bill coming from, or is it? Do you hope to circumvent payment just by changing the name? Is that the plan? When you can't state the variables in your question clearly, you don't get any useful responses.
