During times of crisis people tend to think eternally as apposed to internally. When they are confronted with their own mortality, they tend to pause and reflect on their beliefs, and the possibility of life after death. There’s an old saying that goes something like this; “There are no atheist in a foxhole.”
As for putting “In God We Trust” on our coins that is just an expression of the basic beliefs of this country. A majority of people in the United States have a belief in God. Putting “In God We Trust” on our coins does not make the United States a theocracy. It is an expression of hope that our country will come under the protection of God if we trust in Him.

First off, when "In God We Trust' was put on the currency America was a very religious country. Our founding fathers came here for religious freedom. After 9/11 churches were filling up because everyone everywhere came face to face with evil and death. There human nature made them to turn to something bigger than they are.

At those times, they realize more clearly the omnipotence of the One True God. This is very good for them and also for mankind. The sooner we surrender to the Will of God, the better we can humbly build the unity of the world under His divine guidance.

It's amazing to see people cry out to God when there is a tragedy but ignore Him the rest of the time, but it happens. When people are afraid and looking at their own mortality they tend to be believers.

There are those that take advantage of others' fear to push through things like this that are totally against our Constitution. It's sad.

It is not that they are "more religious" at certain times.
It is just the expression of our faith is more visible at those times.

Generalization. I do not know anyone who is. We did not have any say into what goes on the currency.
