Control Panel > Click the Adminstrative Tools Icon
Click on Computer management
Go under the Storage section to Disk Management
If the second drive shows there, you can reassign it to a letter (D)

First, Do not Format your HDD yet... It will only make things worse. Your data is still there.
Assuming the harddrive is still functional, maybe the boot sector is corrupt, or the FAT (file allocation table.) This is usually repairable.

Download (on another computer) Hirens Boot CD.

It comes as an "Image" of a bootable CD. Use Nero burning rom or similar to burn image the CD.

There are plenty of utilities to repair your HDD, or recover your data on this CD, and best of all its all free.

Good Luck

If you've done the standard chkdsk then try the Maxtor CD. There is a diagnostic tool that could tell you if it is a mechanical failure

You haven't mentioned which version of windows you are using. If you are using windows xp then you will be able to see your d drive in control panel > administrative tools > computer management > disk management.
