for some it is very scary with the prospect of vandalism etc. For others (in better areas) it's harmless fun. What do you think?

it's not just old ladies who get scared!
I'm a young male adult and i'm **** scared!!!
It's good when parents go out with kids. Problem is, most trick or treaters are teenage boys out to cause trouble.

Okay, do Americans ever suffer from bad trick or treaters or is just us Brits who get eggs or worse thrown at our houses if we don't comply?

I was about to say its a tradition... but its not. Its an american idea.
I think its good for the younger kids, but yes it does target vandals. Its not everyone though surely? Its just a small minority of chavs throwing eggs and hanging around with their hands in their pants..

Its just an old custom (yes the current format may be American but it has its roots in the old festival of Samhain which came from the Celtic Britons and Irish) and we should hang onto our customs at a time when immigration and pressure from PC types is trying to undermine them. If the Fanaticist Muslims have their way we'll all be forced to celebrate Eid before long and our own native customs will be forgotten.
If its just a few nicely behaved little local kids coming round with their parents then its fine! I've had a few round tonight and they've been polite and well behaved - I've handed out some little choccy bars. They really enjoy it. I loved trick or treating when I was a kid so it would be hypocritical of me to say I don't agree with it.
Smashing windows, vandalism, attacking people in the street with flour and eggs etc is not what trick or treat is about. When we were kids we only ever "tricked" someone who was really grumpy and nasty to us, and even then it wouldn' t be more than a handful of flour chucked at the door. Pretty harmless.
As for this thing about it being "begging" thats just CRAP! Beggars beg because they are poor and can't afford to eat. Kids do Trick or Treat as am old custom. Some peopel need to get out of their own backsides.

There's nothing wrong with trick or treating for kids. It's just some of the teen agers who ruin it and scare old or vunerable people. Stick to houses that you can see are in the spirit of things so to speak. It's big in the states and it's our heritage not theirs. It's just a mindless minority that ruin it for little kids everywhere. I'mtaking my kids out tonight and they can't wait. Needless to say we won't be scaring any old ladies.

And to "Only Me" above ... No it's not American it has roots in this county GREAT BRITAIN from the festivalof samhain, pronounced "sow-in" it was the festival between the end of the summer and the harvest and the beginning of the winter, their new year when they believed on that night that the boundary between the worlds ofthe living and the dead became blurred. cristians them made november 1st allsaints day or all-hallows or all-hallowmas then became all-hallows eve and eventually halloween. Bonfires were also lit on this date and this is where bonfire night also has its roots.

I love halloween it's my favourite celebration of the year and trick or treating was so exciting as a kid, obviously there are the few people that spoil it for everyone else but that happens with everything. Trick or treating is harmless fun and we were usually with an adult who made sure nothing got out of control. So, anyone want to come to my halloween party tonight?

It is what every person make it for them self. If you want it to be harmless fun than thats what it is. If you choose to go out and vandalize and "trick" so to speak then thats what you get. I personally think its harmless fun. I like Halloween and miss being able to go trick or treating.

No to me it's begging with a threat.
If you don't give them a treat, they will play a trick on you, I call that a threat. When I was a lad we used dress up as cowboys or simular to go round the doors, but we would sing, play a tune on an accordion in my case, do a bit of magic ect for a donation, now the kids don't even tidy themself up before coming to your door.

In Iowa they call it Jesters Day and the kids have to tell a joke before they get a treat, thought that sounded like fun, I think it can be anything we put into it, kind of like life. I enjoy the kids dressing up and the fun they have, it is not a threat to me.

Of Course! My daughter goes out around the nice houses, and puts on a show and sings and tells scarey jokes and stories..just I used to do when I was her age...I also make her a costume every year..handsewn..!!if she recieves money however, she knows to not accept it/return it politely! Of course you get the chavs who see it as another way to terrorise people..but all in all its good..i am not religious..although when younger I was & actually taught Sunday School(!!), but each to their own and peopl ewho disagreewith All Hallow's Eve due to religious beliefs..well..everyone is entitled to their beliefs..but I think thier are slightly over zealous...no offence meant ok?
