If you can take a motorcycle safety course - I highly recommend it.

No, you cannot stay in first - you'll over-rev the engine, and it will eventually damage the engine.

Knowing when to shift up is more of a "feel" thing - you see the RPMs getting higher, and you hear the engine tone going up, you know it's time to shift - it's just something you learn. Do you know how to drive a manual shift automobile? It's kind of the same thing.

The other "thing" is called a clutch. You need to let off the gas, hold in on the clutch, and shift up - all at the same time.

My suggestion is to take a course and learn how to ride before you actually hit the street - you're going to get killed!

I hope you're joking, if not, do yourself and everyone else a favor and take the Motorcycle Safety course before you kill yourself or worse yet, someone else.
