I don't think everyone is. Just Wal Mart.
I'm sure the reason is that so many people lay away stuff at the holidays only to never pay it off and the restocking is expensive , what with all the extra employees they have to pay to do it.

From someone with layaway experience of 4 years, every year is the same. Of all the items placed on layaway, only 10% was actually taken out. The other 90% was cancelled, causing the stores to have too much extra stock. Layaway is plainly too much hassle for what its worth. If you think about it.. someone has to put all of the items back. It causes unnecessary heavy labor. I understand that its not fair for people like us to have to suffer for others actions, but what is bad for business is bad for business. They do have other options, like the credit cards with finance and no money down for 90 days.
Simply put, its the crappy actions of others that places business into its actions. From their side it makes sense.

Walmart is the one getting rid of layaway. I was there Sunday though and saw a sign that said they are still doing it for this holiday season, things have to be out by Dec 8th. Don't know if that applies to all of them or just the one I was in

Walmart has been in the forefront lately about doing away with their layaway feature. But others have quietly done away with it too.
It's a fairly costly feature for them. They have to store all your stuff somewhere & then pay somebody to take your payments every week & apply them to your balances. They don't make any money from it.
Rent a storage unit for your christmas stuff or purchase a lock for a closet, room, basement, etc. in your house & store stuff there.'

I actually use the layaway features in stores because it helps me to afford things I wouldn't be able to other wise. Luckily in my town we have a family run toy store who has a layaway program. I may have to spend more $ on the gifts, but I also have more than a few months to keep them in layaway. If you have storesthat are family run in your area, ask them if they have any layaway programs.

Everything is about making money anymore and not about doing what is right for other people. They need to keep it. It helps a lot of people out during the holidays.

I heard that wal-mart is getting rid of their layaway dept. because they cater to the middle class now. That makes me mad because some people can't afford to buy all at once.It is us the people who have made them what they are and look how they treat us.It all has to do with GREED.

I think layaway is an old idea. It's expensive for stores to maintain. There are other ways that you can budget out your holiday spending.
