It's about women using their perceived feeble, unassuming natures to their advantage and to systematically gain recognition in society. If they quietly work away, unnoticed and unheard, then noone will notice they have come to the fore and made an impression until they are there. It's about using the position you are in and making it an advantage, not a disadvantage.

She's talking about the oppression of women. Sylvia Plath was an avid feminsist and mushrooms are a metaphor for women. Women are slowly creeping their way to the top of power ranks until finally they have at least a "foot in the door"...
