sailors figured out about 500 years ago, its A LOT easier to sail downwind than againts it..........so the trip from the East Coast to Senegal wouldnt be straight accross the Atalantic..in the summer you'd run into the Bermuda High and little wind....but up the coast, past Newfoundland, south of Iceland to Scotland, down the Irish coast and Spain and the West African coast to Senegal.......longer in sea miles, shorter in time.......a small sailing yacht does about 125-150 miles a day; call the distance 5500 miles so .......40 days
