It is a vestige of antiquated style. I agree it makes a man appear dressed up, but that is because that is ingrained in me from childhood. I would rather that style have lasted than the high white powdered wigs for men, aren't you? Even psychiatrist trainees are supposed to wear them while visiting the psychotic patients---kind of a built in noose, don't cha know?
However, when I become queen of the universe, neckties for men will be outlawed, as will high heels for women.
