Depends on the region. I made minimum wage as a veterinary assistant. Also, most clinics will hire and train you to be a vet assistant for free. You don't need to take a course.

Definitely not for earning a living and its definitely better then working at a gas station. Some vet assistants have animals themselves and they get perks like free vaccinations and visits for their animals. Its most certainly for the love of the animal. If you dont have a passion for animals then you wont be a successful assistant. Animals will sense that in a heartbeat. Girlfriend went to vet tech school and her schooling cost more then what she would make in 2 yrs...LOL

There are vet techs, who actually have a two year degree, and vet assistants, who are like kennel cleaners, front desk help, etc.
Vet Assts usually dont make much more than $10 an hour (although if you have a generous boss or stay for a long time you might make slightly more.)
Vet Techs can be in teh 12-15 range but not much more.
They dont do it to get rich, by any means. They want to make an okay living doing something they love.

Both but alot become veternarians by starting out as an assistance themselfs to learn as they say the ropes and most like animals in the first place. If you hate animals why work around them, there are other jobs.
