use COLD water. Let the item soak in cold water as soon as you can. Make sure to keep the water cold, don't let it warm up.
Hot water will set the stain and you will never be able to get it out.
I also like to rub the area w/ a tide to go stick. Just to help the stain out a bit. But cold water should do the trick
Good Luck!

Cold water. Hot water only sets the stain into the fabric.
Blood Stain Removal From Washable Fabric:
Immerse item in strong salt water and keep changing the salt water until it is clear.
Rinse the item in cold water.
Wash normally as directed.

Cold. Hot water will tend to "set the stain" in clothes.

I don't know if hot or cold works the best but i can recommend to use hydrogen peroxide, it breaks up the blood. Pour some on the stain and let it soak. After that rinse with water if its not gone soak it again.

If the blood is fresh cold water is the answer or even peroxide works great. But, if the blood is old you are going to have to work at it with hot water. If you can, bleach is the best thing for getting it out.

Put a clean white towel under the piece of clothing, then blot the blood stain with hydrogen peroxide and that will take out the blood....then wash the item.

If the stain hasn't set for too long, cold water.
Hot or warm water will "set" the stain.
Actually, they have new stuff to get those stains out, now.
And remember to toss the axe in a deep body of water. ;)
