You have several options. All of them take a long time so if you are making a transfer you need to allow several hours. Consider these
1. You can take the Underground from Heathrow to Victoria then at Victoria change to British Rail for a train to Gatwick. This is probably the cheapest option.
2. Take the Heathrow Express to London Paddington, transfer by tube to Victoria, then take the train to Gatwick. This might save you some time, but not sure. I've never done it.
3. Taxi. I don't know what the cost will be but if you use a licensed mini-cab company they will tell you the fare when you book the car. If you go by black cab it will be metered and more expensive than a mini cab. I'd expect a mini cab to cost at least 50 or 60 pounds.
4. National Express bus service runs between the two airports. The trip takes from 1 hr. 15 minutes to 2 hours depending on time of day/traffic. I think the cost is about 18 pounds for a one-way trip. See http://www.nationalexpress.com/destinations/airports.cfm?t=air for booking info and times.

Take the Piccadilly Line (dark blue on maps) to Hammersmith in the direction of Cockfosters. At Hammersmith, switch to the District Line (green on maps) in the direction of Upminster. At Victoria get off the train, and then take the Gatwick Express from there. A Gatwick Express train should leave every 15 minutes, and journey time should be 30 minutes. See http://www.gatwickexpress.com/index.asp?SID={57B2A13C-D71D-40EB-93D5-57A6DABA491F} for more information.

If for any reason or another you cannot take the Tube (health reasons or you just don't like the tube) read below:

At Heathrow, take the 205 Express Bus to the South Terminal Coach station. There, you will have a short walk to the Airport's entrance.

Hope this will help,
Have a nice time!

If you are travelling with little luggage take the National Express Coach. Fare start at £25 for one adult single when you pre-book on-line.

while you're loaded - you could take a helicopter. Takes approximately 20 minutes. in case you % something somewhat extra inexpensive - take a cab. extra inexpensive nonetheless - a bus (as in the different answer) while you're vacationing at the cheap - walk. it relatively is approximately 40 miles!
