Hi! I have recently been asked why I have the eye of ra on my pictures on my 360 page.
I was just wondering what this symbolism means to you? any positive meaning? any negative meaning?
I bring my own personal meaning to the symbol (my name is robbie and my nickname that my parents gave me when i was really little is "ra") and i didn't think it could be a negative thing, but i just wanted to check to see what someone else thought before i decided to leave it on my page.
what does it say about me?
what did you think before you read why i have it on my 360?
thank you for your time. :)

The Eye of Ra is also another name for the goddess's Sekhmet or Hathor. Ra took out his eye to make the cat-goddess Sekhmet b/c when He ruled on earth and was getting old the people of earth were rebelious and Ra sent Sekhmet to deal with the traitorous ones. She got overzealous and started to kill because it pleased her. To finally get her to calm down they took 7,000 jars of beer and blood mixed with mandrakes. They poured them out in a field and when she drank the mixture she became so drunk she could not destroy men any longer and finally she calmed down and became the cow-goddess Hathor.
The Eye of Horus is when Set in the guise of a black hog. Horus and Ra were walking one day and noticed a black hog. Niether of them realized it was Set until it was too late. The black hog set out a bolt of lightning and struck Horus in the eye and blinded him in one eye. The eye was restored by Ra. The sun and moon represent Horus's eye's. One is destoyed by the 'black hog' during an eclipse.
Erin- The eye of Horus was used on the outside of a building so that the people would know where the hospital was. Where do you think we get the Rx symbol?

Seeing an eye of Ra (or eye of Horus, the hawk) as someone's personal symbol, I would think, that the person is really into Ancient Egypt AND that the person may be somewhat afraid of the "evil eye". That's what this symbol is most often used for nowadays - to ward off evil energies.

Often the Eye of Ra is referred to as the Eye of Horus. I actually have a tattoo of this on my upper back. As both Horus and Ra are connected to knowledge and learning, I use the the Eye as symbolism for my never-ending quest for knowledge.
Also, I remember one day a woman came up to me and asked me if I was a doctor or a nurse. She explained that there's a connection between the Eye and medical practice. I guess at one time the Eye was used in place of the now common caduceus.

ok i think just about everyone in the world knows about the history of the eye of ra i.e. that ra was the sun god the the egyptians worshiped and all of that as for being good or evil my personal opinion is that it is good. regardless of the thought of sacrifice and all of that ra was the god that was responsible for the protection of the egyptians who worshiped him and also the eye of ra is believed by some to protect you from the evil eye. but as with any religious symbol what it means to you is something that you need to decide for yourself

Well, I don't know alot about it, but during the time when Egypt was the cultural center of the world ,The worship of Ra', was a religion. Ra was the sun god..I believe there was a lot of bloody ritualism and sacrifice that went with this form of worship....something like that. And the eye of RA? Humm, it's either some type of jewel, or maybe an inner prospective...who knows?

The Eye of Ra is also known as the utchat. In the pyramid texts, it is identified with the uraeus viper which spat venom and fire against the enemies of the sun God. It is also identified with Ma'at, who is the personification of physical and moral law.
To me, as a Kemetic, this is a powerful protective symbol.and one not to be taken lightly.
To those who spoke of it in regards to bloodthirsty human sacrifices... are you sure haven't mixed up the Egyptians with the Aztecs?
