it means that you don't want the other person to tell you something or it could be a phrase that you say when you are shocked at something someone said

If it is said in an exclamation, for example, you just finished telling someone a story and the person shouts "Don't tell me!", it may mean "It's not true!" or that the person is shocked to hear that.

"Don't tell me" can have different meanings.
Sometimes a person will say "don't tell me" and they will literally mean that they do not want you to tell them something. If they look serious, angry, or sad, this is probably what they mean.
Sometimes a person will say "don't tell me" jokingly and they really mean that they DO want you to tell them something. You can usually tell this is what they mean because they will be laughing or smiling as they say it.
If you're not sure, it's probably best to assume they really don't want to know.

Let the person take a guess without telling them the answer first. as in "Don't tell me......your a Libra!"
Or it can be like 'Oh god. Don't tell me ...has happened' - which means something has happened that the person was dreading.
