According to theBREASTFEEDING ANSWER BOOK, published by La Leche League International, no evidence exists that the nursing mother's use of hair-care products, such as hair dyes and permanents, has any effect on her breastfeeding baby. When a mother uses hair-care products, some of the chemicals will be absorbed through her skin. If her scalp is healthy and intact, less will be absorbed than if the skin on her scalp is scratched or abraded.

The concern is not from the chemicals, but the fumes from the process. Chemical processes for your hair need to be done in a well ventilated place so as to minimize the inhalation. Our lungs lining are fragile and can be affected by the chemicals.
Absorbtion of the chemicals? Very unlikely as we have layers and layers of skin cells that acts as barriers to systemic absorption of topical agents. And I verified this with two other doctors as well.
But again, there has never been any well design studies to address this issue.
I did it during breastfeedings and the boys are awesome. :)

It should be fine, they've never discovered any problems with this in the past... but if you can wait until after your done breastfeeding it would be a good idea. Or you can give her a bottle of formula or previously expressed milk for several hours after dyeing your hair just in case!

some say it's ok, some say it isn't
go with your instinct and how it would make you feel
I did not dye my hair during my pregnancy but did it during breastfeeding
Very little chemicals enter the blood stream through the scalp, and chances are very low that they'll go into milk
But, once again, do not do it if you would worry about it.

No, it is not okay, the chemicals from the the hair dye will enter your blood stream. But, I highly recommend that you ask your Pediatrician before you consider such and undertaking.
