it shouldn't have anythign to do with the camera.. your camera should have come with a usb cable that you just plug into the camera and then your computer. It should come up as a usb flash drive. just look through it liek you would a cd

Don't you have the disk that came with the camera? I just bought the A540 this weekend and it came with the disk and usb cable. Stick the disk in, it will start loading automatically, then it will request you restart your computer. Once it restarts, you hook the usb cable to your tower, then into the camera. Turn the camera on and the program to download the photos should start automatically.
If you don't have the disk, check the Canon website and see if they have a file to download.

Why would Canon not be available.
The card can be read on a card reader if the camera is minus the software.

You can try to find download of the camer software or other wise try to use the card to upload your photos to your computer.. For example, some computer comes with compatible card **** and some don't but if your computer doesn't some printers also comes with it...
