If there is any possible way to get both, you should. Sell everything you own on eBay for extra cash.
I you have to only get one, forget about the Blu-ray player and all of the bells and whistles of both consoles and determine which will have more of the type of games you like.
If you are a die hard Nintendo fan and cant do without Zelda, Mario and metriod, then pick up the Wii.
If you have outgrown these characters and titles or might do so in the near future, the PS3 is the way to go for a more adult gaming experience.
Not to say the Wii won't have M rated titles, just nowhere near the selection the PS3 will have.
It all boils down to the games, find the console with the most you will like.

Well, we just got the xbox 360 which is totally worth it and so awesome. If we were to get another system it would probably be the Wii. I know the PS3 has the cool dvd player but who really cares about that? I like more Nintendo games than Playstation ones. I used to like the Playstation better than the Xbox because the controllers were easier to hold, but now Xbox redesigned them and they are smaller and way more managable. I think if you don't have the 360 you should think about that one, it is cheaper than the PS3 and has basically all the same games and some games that used to be on Playstation have now switched to just the Xbox. If you have the 360 than get the Wii because the 360 and PS3 are almost the same gameplay wise and the only difference really is the dvd player. We were talking to a guy that owns an EB Games store and he said the PS3 was good but the Xbox was better, because he gets to try stuff before it goes into his store to sell. Sorry this was so long! Good luck!

It's funny how a lot of people seem to know very little on this subject: "you'll be able to download Nintendo-produced SNES and N64 games for free" or "Wii is for kids by the look of the games and direction it's going"
First of all, nothing in life is free, and the "virtual console" of the Wii will not escape that rule. so yes, you can play games from older consoles such as NES, SNES, N64 and even other manufacturers such as SEGA, but there is a price to pay.
Nintendo say that there console is an attempt to attract the current non-players. So not specially kids, but mainly adults who don't play videogames, which is why there are many titles which look slightly different than what we are used to.
So, you need to consider what you want- PS3 will offer very good in game graphics, a Blue ray player (new dvd player which sony is trying to set as the new standard), and similar games to what is found on PS2, which vary for all styles. Some famous titles are GTA (although also available on PC and XBOX360), Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy and Gran Turismo... As it was mentioned, the Xbox 360 offers very similar graphics (slighlty lower maybe, we shall see), and is at a much lower price. Oh yes, you will probably have difficulty getting your hands on a PS3 in 2006 as the stock will be pretty low, and the price pretty high ($500 or $600 depending on if you want the more complete PS3 (20GB bigger hard drive). Oh maybe I should mention that the best graphics of PS3 require a full HD television (1080p).
Now for the Wii, it's true that some games are "childish" in a way. But there are games such as "Red Steel" which are rated M. But I doubt you will get any GTA style game, as nintendo don't have the policy of "blood, drugs and violence" with their games... Maybe they'll change one day, who knows. So Wii has a "new and revolutionary" way of playing games. Basically, you end up moving your hands in every direction to play. I haven't tried it, so cannot tell you if it's any fun, but supposedly it's more immersive and journalists have said good things about it. Graphics wise, I doubt it's going to be much better than Gamecube. Of course, a bit better, but don't expect realistic physics and cinema quality graphics (don't expect that from PS3 or XBOX360 either). Also, the price of the console is $250 dollars (free game "wii sports").
Also in terms of sound quality, Wii is Dolby Prologic 2 (virtual surround) and PS3 is full surround sound. but again, you would also need a good home cinema to enjoy the best.
To conclude (heh, i know it's pretty long), PS3 is expensive, has great graphics, normal gameplay, and Playstation style games. Wii is much cheaper, has ok graphics, a new gameplay, a virtual console for older games. (PS3 is retrocompatible with PS1 and PS2 games i think), so chose the one you think is better, and don't ask anybody else, as you get "prosony" and "pronintendo" people out there which will tell you to buy the console they prefer.

PS3 by a long shot for the people who actually have the money, Wii is for kids by the look of the games and direction it's going. Adults - would you rather dance about pretending to be playing cutesy anime tennis, or sit in a darkened room playing GTA4? I know which one I'd rather do!!
I have little confidence that Nintendo will produce more than a handful of games that actually make good use of the controllers, and that are any good. Sony have proved themselves as the adult gaming leader and that trend looks set to continue with avengence. Besides, PS3 is reported to be many times more powerful than the Wii AND the XBox 360.

It depends what you are looking for the PS3 will most likely have more new games and is a more advanced system, but Wii system I was told you'd beable to play old nintendo games. Which is great if you like some of the classics. Also the Wii may be better if you have kids because their games seem to be a little more appropriate for kids too. Even with the Wii benefits I'd go with the more powerful PS3, but each his own.

Nintendo Wii!!!
I was watching a program and they had a vote from people who had played both...majority said nintendo was suprisingly more impressive.
It's a whole new way of gaming, its all in the remote
e.g. a sword... you use it like an actual sword... a tennis racket once again its just like the real thing!!!
the only downside is that there's no dvd player but besides that its thumbs up all around!!!!!

Get a Wii.
Nintendo still make the best games. Okay they aren't great on gorefests, but they know how to make things fun. GTA - pah! Give me Mario Kart any day.
Oh, and you'll be able to download Nintendo-produced SNES and N64 games for free.
No contest.
