It depends what your use is.
If it is just for online viewing -
use JPEG (Joint Photographers Experts Group)
as this will save much on your space at the same time give you a good quality picture online. It is good coz the file size will be very small and it is convenient for file sharing as well.
If it is for printing -
use TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)
as this will keep all the important colour info so that it comes out perfect if it is being printed or colour separated. This file size will be quite big. Sometimes as big as a few hundred megabytes.
other than this two formats, there are a lot of formats such as EPS, BMP., PCX., PICT., PXR., PNG., and more where each formats has got its own characteristics and this formats are not as important for general use.

in case you have a chum who has a working laptop or computing gadget or yet another computing gadget available attempt it on that, you're saying it worked initially which has a tendency to symbolize that it does no longer choose formatting. If as i believe it nevertheless does no longer artwork on yet another computing gadget it quite is a defective stress. it quite is extremely uncommon yet can take place. The golden rule of computing is shop a backup, by no potential circulate each and every little thing to a distinctive stress, constantly shop 2 copies. desire this facilitates.
