I would like to find out about the level of contact with the "mundane". Do they read newspapers, watch TV etc? Can they have conversations with ordinary people or write them letters? what kind of restrictions apply? Is there any short read about this? Many thanks!

are you talking about anchorites?
From what I know they do not have any media or talk to people.
From what I understand this is out of choice. Much like a hermit. Just with the pope behind them.
For some people it is a choice so that they can survive this world and remain sane.

My friend's sister is an enclosed Carmelite nun in Spain. She is allowed to keep correspondence with whoever she likes, but is only allowed a few visits a year, and is only generally allowed out to visit the doctor. They don't have TV, she spends most of her time studying.
