Which is the greater income? Is it a fee specified in a contract? Is it records sale? Is it shows/concerts? Do you get a weekly check?
How does it work?

Most make a living by waiting tables or having a real job. Very few people can make a real living playing music. Sorry but it is true!

from my limited understanding, The record company "chooses" or creates a band and "invests" a lotta money to make CD's and videos. The band plays concerts to make money for themselves and payback the record company that re-invensts more money to the band for more recordings and videos. each time a song is played on the radio or cable video show, the station pays money to the bands "Publishing Company". The publisher keeps most and pays some to the band. But the band has to pay back money to the record company.

The band makes money from T-Shirts and live concerts, the record company and publishing company makes money from CD sales.

THATS why the recording industry HATES "file sharing" because the band makes money from live performances NOT much money from CD sales. The recording company makes most of its profit from CD sales.

basically, musicians have to perform at concerts to make enuff money to live. The problem with that is that the musician's life is an unstable life until the musician has made enough money to stay home and invenst his own profits in other areas.

the VAST majority of musicians in this world know very little of economics and dont live a comfortable lifestyle.

Royalty checks on CD sales, gate receipt for concerts, and additional money for guest appearances on TV shows. Very, very, very few, however, are able to eke out a living simply being a musician. The gifted ones with strong connections could earn some money by studio work, yet most have real jobs and spend time there dreaming about making it big one day.
