I was addressed occasionally as master until I was 18... I guess they were wrong though but I don't know for sure. It would make sense at 18 because that's when you are legally freed from your parents. 14 is probably the original age of consent though... I know in Canada, 14 is the age at which you're legally able to have sex but the current Conservatives are trying to up that to 16. In the States it is 18 which is way too old--who the hell *actually* waits til they're 18?? They just don't talk about it before then because they can get in trouble.

The term "Master" is so little used these days, and then only in extremely formal situations, that some etiquette books don't even address the issue. "Master" is a very old British (then American) formal term of respect for adult men that morphed into the term "mister"; "master" was relegated to boys under age 13. Today's envelope etiquette suggests a kid is Master John Jones up to age 8, John Jones until age 18, then Mr. John Jones. http://www.sdreader.com/php/ma_show.php?id=1004

Master is still used as the written form of address for boys of some undefined age, often regarded as under 13 in formal correspondence, particularly invitations to formal affairs. In the United States, the general usage follows the English, though less strictly. Adult males are addressed, formally, as "Mister," while boys are addressed formally as "Master," though the latter is retained only in highly formal situations (such as for weddings and wedding invitations, which tend to be the only time many people follow full, formal etiquette) and by some older persons. The age at which the transition from master to mister takes place is not strictly observed, though approximately 13, or the beginning of high school (which is roughly the same) is usual for those who still observe the distinction. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_(form_of_address)

I was first addressed as 'Mr' when I was 13, so I've always assumed this is the correct age.
