ferous means iron(thus fe is the chemical symbol) so if a metal is non-ferous it has no iron and if it is ferous it does

Hiya, ferrous metals contain the element iron(hence the Fe symbol for iron in the periodic table). Non-ferrous metals do not have any iron content.
hope that helps,
Dave the metallurgist.

Ferrous metals include iron and any alloy of iron e.g. mild steel, stainless steel and cast iron. Non ferrous metals are all the rest! Not to be confused with ferromagnetic metals which means metals which are attracted to a magnet.

I'm sorry to have to disagree with our welder friend. The difference between ferrous and non-ferrous metals is simply - iron.
The former contains iron, the latter does not. It has nothing to do with 'carbon content'.

I don't know... but, would you settle for ferrous and non-ferrous? If so then the answer is iron... a metal containing iron.
