It takes about a million years for a photon to make it out of the core.

According to a diagram in one of my books for astronomy, it takes an average of a million years from light to make it from the core to the Earth. The reason I say to Earth and not the surface of the sun, is because it only takes another 8 minutes for the light to get from the Sun to Earth.
