I love my jewellery and as I can't afford anything expensive, I buy from high street shops. I've bought quite a few items from H Samuel but the problem is after wearing it once or twice it looks rusty and I have to use a jewellery cleaner each time I need to wear it. I have some old yellow gold jewellery items that have remained the same since I was given or bought them years ago.

HPJ Ltd.

Used to work there, and the gold is very good value for money. Haven't had problems with the gold i've bought from there. Is cheaper than argos and H Samual

Have shops across the country

All gold requires cleaning, unless you're just going to keep it in an airtight container, free of dust. Even Diamonds need cleaning and they're the hardest stone, ranking 10 on a soft-hard scale of 1-10.

If you're wearing it everyday and you work with your hands (also including general house cleaning), it's going to get dirty. It'll be better quality than 14k but it still needs to be cleaned, buffed and polished.

Also, the rings you mentioned that got rusty, they were more than likely not real gold, or they were gold plated. It's better to buy your jewelry from a reputable source, not some company on TV like QVC, I have a few items from them and they just look mediocre, not impressive like what they show on tv, which is under several florescent lights to make the item look better.

Gold does not rust, but will develop a patena from wear over time - the degree will depend on how you wear your jewellery. 18ct would actually be more affected than 9ct because it is softer. H.Samuel is part of the world's largest jewellery retailer - Signet Group plc. They have great customer service and I'm sure they will look after you if you have genuine concern with the products you have bought.

Gold should not tarnish, that is one of the reasons it is so highly prized.

However it may be that because you buy lower carat gold it is the alloy that tarnishes, and this may be why the older items stay looking clean, they may be a higher carat.

What I do is wait until shops like H Samuel have a sale and then buy something that is of a better quality, or you can try antique shops for second hand jewellry.

Try QVC they are the biggest jewellery retailer in the UK. You can check out on line if you cant view on TV. Quality is very good and much cheaper than high street stuff and more variety too.
