My wife is looking for some warm tights for this winter. Since I like the way tights look on her, I'm only too happy to help her out. What brands, styles, and material content can you ladies recommend? Are nylon blends warm enough, or only cotton and wool? And finally, do they make knit tights for adults? Nothing too expensive either if you can help it, she'll need more than one pair.

I have always thought of tights as the thick ones and pantyhose as the sheer ones. I know in the UK they are called tights regardless of sheerness. I appreciate the answers I am getting, but I'm really looking for specifics, like brand, where you got them and how warm they are/were. The Hanna Andersson site looks good and so does the Anthropologie. I know she would probably love the cable-knit tights they have, but $$$! So that’s a maybe. At any rate you can get wool tights at http://www.mytights.com/mytights/findit/wool.html
I just really want to keep options open and see which brand and style work best for my sweetie, but we don’t know what is all out there. If you wish to edit your answers and/or add details I would really appreciate it.

I always thought "tights" were the warn ones and "pantyhose" were the sheer ones. I didn't know that was a US vs UK labeling. Anyhow, I LOVE good tights too, and I actually prefer the patterned ones. The best tights I own came from Hanna Anderson (catalog/online company), but the price tag definitely reflected that. I've been scoping out some at Anthropology that are nice, but also pricey. I have found some pretty decent ones at Target in the sock section, and they've lasted alright. Good luck! Out of curiosity, where have you seen wool tights?

Hi. You should look for tights that contain Lycra, because this means that they'll fit properly and won't start to fall around her ankles (Nora Batty in Last of the Summer Wine, remember?). Given that you refer to them as tights rather than pantihose (the US usage) I assume that you're in the UK - I'd go to Marks and Spencer. They have a good range of basic colours and thicknesses and they wear well - I'm still wearing some I bought three years ago; they're good value also.

Hope that helps. How nice to have a husband who cares so much! lucky lady.

egads! wool?!!!! she will itch her crotch off (sorry for saying that).. no women wants to wear wool down there.. I find any good stockings from my local mall sock shop works fine.. You also get what you pay for.. cheapo's tear and run fast and if you invest in a little more quality, they last longer and tend to be warmer..
