You've never heard of the Sock Fairy?, she was traumatised because when she was little her mother the Bigmean Fairy made her wear horrible rough shoes barefooted, so poor thing she has an addiction and spends her adulthood (that's been lasting 1000 years) stealing people's socks...

Terry Pratchett has written about a monster that eats socks (it would be small and a bit looking like an elephant), but on a more day-to-day basis (excluding any reference to Discworld), it appears that they are often between the drum and the casing of the washing machine or in another piece of cloth.

This has been my question for years. I have a husband and two grown sons..... and over a million (well that might be an overstatement) single socks. I have come to the conclusion that they either go to sock heaven or their is a one legged man in my neighbourhood stealing them off the line!!!

ok, i hope your ready for the answer.........

its all due to Borris, Borris is the giant spider who lives in your house, he moves around from time to time from house to house. he is a very clever spider making himself invisible when needed.

Borris knows how us mere humans hate him, and if you could see the size of this monstrous spider you,d s**t youself, so when Borris feels threatened that maybe you are on to him, he moves on.

He packs up his belongings and gets ready to leave, only his socks are so worn out due to his never ending journey so before he leaves, he nicks em.
Due to the fact that he has eight feet, he doesnt have time to be fussy, so he grabs what he can, and leaves.

poor Borris, will anyone ever love him????????

hope this doesnt give you nightmares, he,s a friendly spider really. xxxxxxxxxxxx

Nobody believes me i have seen it it hides inside your tub .
when i was younger my sister put me in the tub for fun and shut the lid.
All of a sudden i had a thing ripping at my socks.
It looked like a lint ball on legs.
So that is where your socks go dont ask me how to get them back but sometimes they show up maybe the lint monster didnt like the taste.
but beware it is real!

They have actually probably gone down between the outside of the drum and the casing of the washing machine. As they are small they can work their way through the seal around the drum. If you want to avoid the problem put all your small items in a mesh bag to wash them in.
