I have played dvd's on my computor before but now they will not play. Windows media acknowledges them but will not play them.

it could be the dvd region. try checking that. I had the same problem, i bought a dvd in america and played it here, on an asian computer, it couldnt read the disc

May need a new dvd drive. Can you play cds and other programs using that disk reader?

Clean your DVD drive with CD cleaner.
Also clean the disks.

just upgrade the media player version or do one thing take new player like powerdvd or zoom player , etc., these are dvd suppoortable music players. this is good for u.
