It depends upon which National Museum you are talking about. In 1773, the Charleston Library Society opened the first museum in the American Colonies. Then, in 1780's Charles Wilson Peale, who studied natural history, opened a museum in his Philadelphia home.

In 1866, Peabody, who was a Massachusetts banker, donated money to Harvard and Yale and established a science museum.

During the mid-1800's, more than 200 museums were established in the United States.
