you can open a doorknob type lock with a credit card(especially the cheaper ones) but not a deadbolt. ON the part that goes from the lock into the frame of the building(the part that moves into the door when you open it) is a small cylindrical shaft behind the main one that is designed to prevent this; but it can be easily circumnavigated

You can open a bedroom or bathroom door. But not a front door or deadbolt. Just slide it past the latch and wiggle it towards you. I do it all the time when my kids lock the bathroom and close it when they walk out.

oh my god!! i was just wondeirng that today!! i've tried it and it has never worked.....tried it on my own house of course lol, i'm not a burglar in training lol. i just thought it was a movie trick, but my friends got broken into the other day and the cops reckon it was a credit card......so maybe it depends on the lock?? dodgy ones work i guess!! we have a deadlock so that can't budge no matter what!!
