a datailed practical criticism is exam board speak for 'evalution' - this means that you have to have a debate with yourself on paper, the pros cons, arguments for against, one person said this the other said this.
argh example time...
if the essay asks for a detailed practical criticism of a political ideal, then you have to explain that ideal then use other political ideals to show the faults/weaknesses of the first. you'd have to break the ideal down into different areas (ie the political ideal's veiw of religion, wealth, production, feminism, the family etc) and for each separate item use examples of another ideal to show the differences/similarities between them.

Detailed would mean to use a lot of sources and credit them in the essay's bibliography. Practical would mean realistic - don't include fanciful criticisms. Criticisms means to look at the situation from all angles not just one and then choose the one you think is correct to put in your concluding paragraph.

It means what it says. Do not criticise for the sake of it and where you do criticise, give reasons and suggestions for alternative methods, statements etc.
