if your teenage son was attacked by two men, (unprovoked), would you confront the men or would you worry about retaliation later on?

Police first.

Scheming, balaclavas, 5 mates, basball bats and a dark alley next month.

Need a few more facts here, what was done in the attack? How old are the other men? Do you have the backing of a close community? Does the attack warrant ABH or GBH?
If he was badly attacked then police, if the men were late 20's or above and you're talking about a young teenager, then police. If we're talking about your son's 18 and they are 20, then I would look to approach their mum's and the community to get it sorted.
My ex husband got a number of clips round the earhole, and real mouthfuls by a number of Mother type figures when they found out he was being unfaithful to me. And my son will get the same treatment no matter how old he is - but that's the community I live in, old fashioned values.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

I strongly recommend that the correct authorities are contacted immediately.

If you feel that your son's life may be in danger the police can offer you and your son "protection". This could mean you moving to a "safe house".

These measures maybe employed when witnesses give evidence and fearful of reprisals against them or there family etc

It maybe a good idea to contact Victim Support.

I would report it to the Police immediately with any corroborating evidence that it was actually them. Vigilantism, although I can understand why you may want to do it, will only lead to escalation of the problem and retaliation ten times as bad when your son is next out alone.

The simple LEGAL answer is report it to the police and press charges.

BUT that's the legal answer. I need a whole lot more information before going any further. UNprovoked?

Although it's quite natural to want to confront these men, you may end up being hurt as well. If it was my son,I can't honestly say what I might do. Since it wasn't I'll suggest letting the law do it's job.

I would call the police immediately. If you contact the men, you're sending your child the wrong message. You want him to get help when he needs it rather than taking things into his own hands, no?

You'd better go to the authorities. It's best for professionals to handle this because people may be hurt again. if you go to the court then you'll get justice and you won't have to get into a quandary. Better to be safe than sorry. Best wishes!

I'd report it to the police. Don't get involved on a personal level, let the professionals deal with it.

Well in Texas we'd do one of two things call the LAW or shoot the bastards and drag'em in to our yard and tell the LAW they were robbing us. Don't mess with Texas
