I just got a new laptop that has Wi Fi or wireless or whatever. It's set up to go wireless. I have friends that have dsl, cable, and modem internet service. How can I (if at all) connect to the internet on my laptop through their service? I read something about a wireless access software but didn't completely understand it. No one I know has the wireless router boxes or whatever. I've figured out how to connect if in the midst of wireless like in a cafe or library. Now I need to know how to connect if I'm at one of my friends house. Hope I'm explaining it right. Thanks in advance for helping.

Miss Kitty, that was all very complicated now wasn't it?

1. Does your laptop have a radio tower symbol on it? I'll assume it does and that you have wireless capability.

2. It seems as though your friends have DSL, but not wireless. They or you, will need to go buy a wireless access point or router.

3. Plug it into their DSL Modem, follow the dirtections in the box (there is no need to use the cd)

4. Name the wireless something you guys like kittywifi. That will be how your laptop will know that it is thier service.

5. I'd recommend you lock the service down, but that's a bit more advanced, no need to hurry.

You say you can connect in a Cafe or Library. If your friends have a wireless router, it should be just the same at their house. They might have to tell you their network security password.

If they have a regular router, and not a wireless router, then you need a a cable. They probably have a cable from their computer to their router. You need one just like that. Your computer probably has a connection for it.

They might not have a router at all. First, you should encourage them to get one. If they get a second computer, they will have the same problem. A router is less than $50 these days.

But, many people with only one computer connect directly to the modem. In this case, it is *possible* that your friend can configure his computer so that you can share his connection, but that is trickier.

first of all your friend must have a wifi router or wifi router+adsl/dsl modem. you must know the network name (SSID) of their wireless local area network (wifi lan). normally private wifi configuration for wifi router or wifi router+adsl have a security key and you have to put this key inside your laptop wifi setting (with the SSID) to enable it to receive the signal from the wifi lan. normally a new laptop come with installation or software driver cd. inside this cd there will be a utility software to configure your wifi using wireless access software. if you don't have that cd, find out what kind of wifi adapter your laptop have and you can try search the utility software inside the net. you can also configure it using windows xp wifi configuration utility, personally i prefer using the utility software, it's much easier and user friendly.
