To combat desertification, no spiritual awakening is needed. A person just needs to evolve to the level of a human being ... that is all ! The basic instinct of self-preservation should allow common sense to prevail, to behave in a life positive manner.
Spirituality is to evolve much beyond just the level of human being, the human perception level, the sensory perception level... it is too much for most people !

Well, it could be that spiritual awakening among the masses would keep them off from too much industrial and economic activity and that would certainly help. Further, I am told it is possible to bring rains through spiritual powers - well I find it difficult to believe though.

Spiritual awakening is an answer to lots of current worries.It makes one understand how to live a purposeful life without endangering our future on earth. True meaning of life is to look around to think of others in the surrounding and listen to your inner voice.It's to treat every living being like you want to be treated.Long long ago, it was a widely accepted notion that thehead of a race/community or the king has to primarily do everything to keep mother earth 's fertility in healthiest form. To make rain ,in good measure which helped sustain life cycles in eco-sphere ever- energised and let the un-ending flow of life get going.This was his principal responsibility. For he was the chief priest to propitiate mother Earth.Possibly, yajna or similar rituals were the results of such beliefs. To provide for the well-being of his fellow society ,in terms of material and spiritual needs was an implicit mantra.And his part as one in charge of "society" exetended beyond human members .It very much included the river, mountain ,the forest, tree birds, cattles lakes wild animals bees and insects- all things in nature-practically.However present times witness vicious things perpetrated by man to satisfy a never-ending greed. Only an awakened spirit would help stop the savegery and save Earth from peril of extinctions due to further denudification of living spaces.

lots of folks believ they'r havin spiritual awakenings,
the problem is they go on to build extravagant spiritual
resorts,start billion dollar corporations, sell luxury ocean
cruises, which destroy the environment
even further. only a small number of ppl are actually
conservin nature, so i dont know
if the planet could be spared without some type
of major catastrophe

after being spiritually awakened you will start loving each and every creation of god himself and will be more than willing to contribute to development of mankind and you will start to move away from materialism and start loving nature. so you will either start taking extra care of vegetation which is vulnerable to desertieication and start planting new trees to reclaim the deserted land.
