if you can
buy 2 of the same type
there is a new tech in new computers/notebooks
that is called Dual Channeling
basically
if you have 2 of the same RAM sticks
it will increase your performance
like if you were to have a 256
and a 1gb
your performance will be doubled (hypothetically, ofcourse, it will be different in real life, i am just giving examples)
but if you pair a 512mb
with another 512mb
your performance will be multiplied about 2.1 to 2.4 times
so it is 1/10 to 2/5 times faster than a off set pair of RAM

Your question doesn't make sense, or you mis-typed. If you are asking if it is recommended to install 1 GB of RAM using four 256 MB RAM modules, I would try and stay away from that. It is always better to put one module of RAM in than several, unless your motherboard requires a minimum of two (some older motherboards required that due to the way the banks were configured). However, most newer boards can take one module, and that is what I'd recommend you go with. If you are talking RAM and Cache, I'd go with this or higher on both. For many of the programs made today, 2 GB of RAM and 512 MB of Cache is pretty good.

That all depends on whether the laptop is able to take the RAM. See the laptop's user guide, or visit the maker's website. Or try Crucial's Memory Advisor at: http://www.crucial.com/index.asp

Install 1x1GB or 2x 512MB RAM and make sure to buy a module that is compatible with your laptop.

My advice regarding computer memory is: get as much as you can straight away, because pretty soon you will no longer have enough (like six months from now).
