There is a condition called plantar fascitis, that can cause severe pain in the achilles tendon, and also in the arch of the foot. There are several modes of treatment, and it is not due to an injury but is an ongoing problem esp when one does not wear shoes with the proper arch support and fit. Esp if one goes barefoot a lot.

Worth checking into.
And, of course, if pain continues, consult a physician

If he's athletic he could have done so. The achilles tendon in humans operates with low safety factors, so is quite susceptible to damage, either acutely, or chronic damage from fatigue stress. Or he could be suffering from tendonitis, which is just inflammation of the tendon, but that can hurt like buggery!

What's your dad complaining of actually? Need more info, please. Anyway, If you suspect achilles tendon injury ask him to tip toe. If he can't on the involved leg, then maybe he has tendon injury.
