This is quite possible for a while now.
I use Finale 2000 which is not free, but an amazing program. There is 2006 now and it can play even the rarest types of instruments.

I'm a self taught pianist, and without sounding like a cliché the best way to learn the piano is practice... It's all about repetition and practice, find a piece you truly love, if you aren't sure find small (free) guides on how to learn to read sheet music and just go for it!! If you are following a strict syllabus then i can't help but if not... Just do what you want, learn WHAT you want, and have fun, I've learnt more from teaching myself than my friend has from his lessons, purely because of my love of learning what i want to learn :)
