They didnt perish, they simply evolved to agriculture as the population swelled and natural food sources dwindled. but if you look hard enuf and in the right places, there are still plenty of hunter gatherers around :-)

There are still some hunter gatherer societies in Africa and the Amazons but it is impossible to live this way in Western Society, due to our views on land ownership. Just ask the Roma how westerners treat hunter gatherers.

I'll refer you to Daniel Quinn's novel Ishmael, which is a very, very interesting perspective on the evolution of human society--and why, as soon as we stopped being hunter-gatherers and went to agriculture, we more or less screwed everything up. Heh. Anyway, good book.
