If you've ever played catch with someone who throws really,really hard it will only take a couple of throws before you also put your finger outside for more padding .

That finger gets sore cuz it is in the pocket of the glove when u catch the ball. Personally I kept it inside but I played mostly softball and in the outfield so i rarely had to worry about it hurting.

It makes it easier to close their glove and to keep the glove from comin out of their hand.

So they can squeeze the glove closed better, quicker, and tighter when they are fielding a ball!!

Extra protection as that finger is the one closest to the pocket.
