I am not a Liverpool supporter, in fact I do not support any team but I have watched them as well as others over the years and I really cannot see how you can class them as a boring team during the 80's. As for the demise as you put it I wonder how many of the other teams in the premiership that have never won the Champions League or F A Cup or the League would like to have the silverware in their trophy cupboard that Liverpool have. The reason you feel they are in demise is because you are measuring them by the success they have had in the past. In fact, if there was an all time greatest football team based on English teams alone I believe that Liverpool would be in the top three and possibly at the very top./

The passing back to the goalkeeper rule has nothing to do with Liverpool's so called decline. When a team has recently won the European Cup and F A Cup how can you say they are in decline. Liverpool have never been boring. How can they have been when they have had so many great players. They knew how to play both in this country and in Europe and adapted their style accordingly. As to Newcastle playing attractive football I think you must be on another planet. They have not played any decent football since Kevin Keegan was there.

The demise of that Liverpool team can be put down to 2 things:

1) Too many old players that were in the twilight of their career - Dalglish, Molby, Lawrenson, Hansen, Rush, Aldridge, Houghton, Beardsley, Grobbelaar, Whelan, Barnes, McMahon and Nicol (to name a few) were all at their peak during the mid to late 80's. Liverpool didn't replace them quickly enough with young blood.

2) Once Dalglish left as manager they didn't go with the times and tried to replace him with a familiar face. First Ronnie Moran took over for a few games and then Graeme Souness took over permanently. He has almost single-handedly destroyed every club he has been to.

On the boring thing - yes they probably were quite boring. But had they played in Italy at that time, they would have been hailed as geniuses. Remember the 'great' Ajax team of the late 90's that won one European Cup and lost another on penalties? They were dreadful to watch (very negative) yet everyone raved about them as they played 'beautiful' football and were Dutch. In my opinion the 80's Liverpool team were one of a kind for this country.

Of all my football heroes, half were longtime Liverpool players.
I was a Liverpool supporter before I knew it.
My earliest heroes were Keegan, Dalglish then Beardsley. All played exciting football. The Barnes / Beardsley combo was my favourite as a kid.
It wasn't the backpass that did them in, it was complacency, and the tiring effect of always having a target on your back by being the best.

Liverpool have always played an attractive passing game - giving it to the goalie enabled the team to set their own pace and not be harried into rash moves by the opposition. Think about people like Alan Hansen and Jan Molby who brought the ball from their own half and started many goal scoring moves in that way.

I don't think that football has been either boring or attractive during the 80's or any other era. It is simply a good game.
