hi i live in toronto and i am currently on EI. and also i am due in 2 weeks for first baby. Will my EI automatically switch to maternity insurance or do i have to do something. Every time i call them they are sooooo bz that it jsut hangs up on its own or they say to call back. I am too tired to sit on the phone for long periods. Anyone been through this , what do i have to do please let me know. Thankyou

Most times you will switch to maternity benefits.

You really have to speak to a TRAINED EI agent to get the correct answer to this. They need to look at their screens to determine this...NO ONE...I repeat NO ONE can tell you for sure until they look at the screens. I'm assuming you must be on sick benefits now...but call and make sure. I dont know how much I can stress enough to call to speak to an agent to ensure either that the screens will flip, or that all nec. paperwork has been done.

Try calling first thing in the morning...right when the lines open. (8:30am) It may be annoying, but that is the best way to get it. Or, if you are able to...go down to your local Service Canada office. (what they are calling EI now) Calling your local office wont help....they cant answer calls over the phone locally and are supposed to refer any questions to in person or Enquiries number. (most offices are understaffed too)

I'm on EI right now and I would be using the same call centre as you. When I have called first thing in the morning, the wait has been less than 5 mins. I'm sure you know this...but as soon as you call into the number, immediately hit "0". That will skip some of the annoying menu and get you where you want to be. Right now is busy for them because the seasonal workers are leaving their jobs. (thats why the phones are so busy)

Btw....congrats in advance on your baby :)

PS Remember..."assume" makes an *** out of "u" and "me"...better to get a good book and call and make sure than wish you woulda after when you are exhausted

Don't you have to fill out a form for Maternity Benefits
