because somebody who does that is suffering from an eating disorder called 'bulimia nervosa' wherein the patient is caught in the vicious cycle of binging and purging/throw up. There are many causes sometimes genetic and often a misperception of their weights and appearance and a distorted body image resulting from peer pressure too.

They definitely have an eating disorder. They are lying to you and to themselves if they think they are not concerned about weight. With all the media about this, for some reason they have decided to try this "cure" for calories. It's no cure, but a deadly game someone plays to have some control over something -- in this case, to completely control how their body will 'shrink'.

Don't buy the 'not concerned about weight' thing. I had a very close friend that we knew had a problem eating (or keeping food down), but we had no idea how dangerous this had become for her. Her lifeless body was found in her exercise clothes, slumped on the living room floor, with an exercise DVD playing. She was very young, but her heart gave out.

She now resides in a cemetery. We miss her every day.

Not sure about the not having to do with weight idea. People who do that are using food as a way of dealing with Control issues. They may feel like everything else in their life is out of control, but what & how much they eat is the one thing they can control. Counseling, the sooner the better for someone who is doing this. I have watched a family go through near death with thier daughter over this too many times to count. Get ahold of it early on, before it takes over or simply takes your life.

People who do this repeatedly are bulimic. This is a mental disorder. It can be very dangerous to ones health. If someone only does it once, just to try it, I guess it would be OK. However, this is how many bulimics start out. If this is a friend of yours, I would let her know the downside of force vomiting.
