Alcohol is a depressant, and helps you sleep just like taking a sleeping pill. However, it's habit-forming just like sleeping pills as well. The reason you wake up after only a few hours is because when the alcohol is metabolized, the depressant effect goes away and you wake up. You feel like crap because alcohol is also dehydrating, giving you a headache and making you tired. You are probably also feeling bad because you're not getting enough sleep.

One way to get over the habit is to just stop. You'll have a few bad nights, but when your body gets fatigued enough, you'll sleep. Take a look at some of the resources for insomnia and try those instead. Some of the basics are using the bed only for sleep (no watching tv or reading), lowering activity levels for an hour or so before bed, cutting caffeine in the evening, and exercising in the morning rather than before bed.

If none of this works or you don't think you can do it yourself, you may want to look into an alcoholic or substance abuse support group or program. Since yours appears to be mostly habit-based than constant physical cravings, they may be able to give you more specific advice based on experience treating problems just like this.

Habits involving chemical support can be very hard to fix, but it is do-able. Good luck!

Alcohol causes a sleep disorder, one day you will find that the opposite occurs and it will be alcohol keeping you awake - get out of the habit now

Wow, that is strange. Have you told your doctor? Maybe he could recommend a medicine for you to get to sleep without drinking.

How long have you been doing that? Youll have to find other ways to unwind before sleep. Its the same as any drug, it would be better to try and sleep without medication.
